Hello,
I am planning to buy an older house. The location is ideal, and we also like the surrounding area. The house was built in 1987. During the viewing, I noticed black spots on the bathroom ceiling. I opened a section of the ceiling and found glass wool insulation underneath, which also shows black spots.

I suspect this might be mold, and now I have some questions.
Do I need to remove the glass wool in all the rooms?
Is it really harmful to health?

Update: I contacted a company, and without having seen the glass wool, they said it is carcinogenic.

What do you think about this?

The glass wool from that time is, of course, not comparable to the material used today, especially in terms of thermal performance. You should get a quote to know what financial costs to expect. I would also classify it as potentially harmful to health.

In my opinion, it must be proven that this fine dust actually enters the lungs. Everything else is just speculation.

What I would also like to know is whether a vapor barrier is installed?

Hello,
Here in the forum, you can find some information about roof insulation. You just need to study it carefully. However, proper planning remains essential. If you are unsure, you should definitely hire an expert to carry out an assessment.

Approach the matter differently and take a close look at the underlay membrane. Or ask roofers or carpenters, as they know what I mean. They will say until when this was used.

So if I suspect something, I want to know exactly. Take a sample and have it tested. That way, you will be certain whether it is mold or not.

If that is not the case, then I wonder why you want to replace the glass wool insulation. If the correct material was installed, in my view there are no health issues. Don’t stress yourself out.

As mentioned before, take a sample and have it tested, then you will have certainty.
