I would recommend a surface planer, for example the Eibenstock EOF 100.1 (with a carbide disc). You can adjust the milling depth in 0.1mm (0.004 inch) increments, so the material removal is limited. Use a proper vacuum cleaner (Class M/H) with it. This makes the process quick and clean. I have done this myself as well.
