I am currently renovating an apartment and having major difficulties removing the carpet from the subfloor (old wooden floorboards). The carpet adhesive is stuck firmly over a large area on the floorboards, which I want to refinish. Question: Do I really have to scrape off the entire surface with a putty knife, or can the sanding machine handle it? I’m afraid the adhesive residues won’t be sanded off...

The adhesive residues can be removed with a floor sanding machine (remember to use dust extraction). If you rent such a machine, make sure to also get sanding discs suitable for your specific needs.

I have also had good experiences with the floor sander. At first, the rental fee seemed quite high to me, but in hindsight, I’m glad for the work and effort saved...

So, my husband did this for us once; he used some kind of electric putty knife or something like that. It actually went quite quickly. He said that using a sanding machine might smear everything more, so that's why he chose the putty knife.

Yes Angelika, an electric scraper from Bosch is ideal for this purpose. I have one myself, and it works very well for removing old flooring.
However, you should be careful not to hold it too steeply, as the scraper blade can quickly become dull or even break.
Therefore, when scraping, always keep it flat and apply light pressure to loosen the flooring.

Hi Paule, I think this was exactly what my husband had. He always kept it flat as well, and the carpet came up quite quickly. He also mentioned that you can do other things with it if you have certain attachments. I believe you can use it to miter cut baseboards too?
