Hello everyone, I’m giving this forum a try. We will soon be moving into our condominium. We have an open kitchen where six recessed lights were planned, evenly spaced according to my instructions, with the middle two lights positioned at the center of the room. I measured the center of the room from the kitchen cabinet to the wall. The electrician apparently measured from the kitchen cabinet to the window. As a result, the recessed lights are visually shifted by about 15cm (6 inches) and are not in the center of the room. The site manager says it can’t be changed at this point. Since this looks very distracting, I’m looking for simple and affordable solutions to shift four of the six lights by about 15cm (6 inches) without redoing everything, as the ceiling plaster is already finished, everything is painted, and the kitchen is in place... plus the budget is very limited now. Thanks for any helpful advice. Regards, VOD-1

Hello VOD,

It is definitely possible to relocate the light fixtures. You remove the existing ones, pull the cables as far as possible out of the ceiling, create channels in the ceiling plaster, and cut new openings for the fixtures in the correct locations.

The previous openings are then converted into junction boxes, from which cables are run to the new openings, and the new fixtures are installed. The junction boxes will either have a cover that remains visible (but is not necessarily bothersome) or you can close and plaster over the old openings.

If the fixtures have individual transformers, it’s best to leave them in the old opening and only run new cables.

The effort involved is relatively high but can be well justified by the desired result. Have an electrician provide you with a quote.

Good evening, thank you for the input. We are somewhat hesitant about the financial cost and even more concerned about the mess and the risk of damaging something else. Therefore, we have now decided on the stretch ceiling option. In a few weeks, we will know exactly how well this choice works out for us. Kind regards, VOD

That is also a solution. You can share an update once it is completed.
