Hello everyone,

We are currently at the start of construction and have completed the material selection.
We chose a mineral-based exterior plaster (2mm (0.08 inches)) in a gray tone and received a note that for a light reflectance value above 20, additional reinforcement can be applied, but this is only a recommendation and not mandatory.

The extra cost was estimated at around 3,600 euros... we are now unsure whether to follow this recommendation. Could someone with experience in this area provide some advice?

Thanks in advance.

A 2mm (0.08 inches) thick mineral plaster. Are you sure?

I consider a 2mm mineral plaster on an ETICS (which insulation material? EPS or mineral wool) to be potentially very problematic from a construction perspective. It is not flexible enough and tends to crack easily under mechanical stress, such as hail impact.

An organic plaster is more flexible, as long as it has not become brittle due to aging. For a building construction heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of <20, most manufacturers of ETICS/plaster systems usually recommend an additional reinforcing layer. Whether this is sensible and necessary in your specific case can only be assessed once all components of the ETICS are clearly specified by the manufacturer. Two reinforcement layers cannot be incorporated into a plaster layer as thin as 2mm.

If it is only about the additional reinforcing layer, the extra cost of €3,600 is not immediately understandable. A mineral plaster on ETICS should generally be at least 6–8mm (0.24–0.31 inches) thick or even applied as a two-layer thick plaster system up to 15mm (0.6 inches) with a total weight under 30 kg/m² (6.1 psf).

You should ask the supplier to provide a detailed description of the complete ETICS/plaster/paint system build-up and also request the building authority approval (building permit / planning permission) for this system.

Good morning,

I think I was not clear enough.

This is what the specification says regarding the plastering work.

The exterior wall will receive a mineral-based exterior plaster in white color. Other color shades are subject to an additional charge and can be selected together according to the contractor’s color chart before construction begins. The surface will be textured with a grit size of 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches).

The wall material to be used is

[I]The exterior walls will be built as solid insulated walls made of 36.5 cm (14.4 inches) aerated concrete thermal insulation blocks.[/]

Yes, it would be helpful if all the information were provided in the initial question. That would allow for more precise answers.

I agree with you. It was my mistake, for which I would like to sincerely apologize... May I still ask for your opinion on whether the reinforcement makes sense?
