Hello,

we live in an older building and now want to improve its energy efficiency. Unfortunately, we are confused due to the media coverage about expanded polystyrene (EPS) for external wall insulation and the flood of information about various insulation materials. We simply want to insulate our exterior walls...

Therefore, I wanted to ask about your experiences with external wall insulation and different materials. From choosing the material and installation to living in an insulated house...

I would appreciate it if someone could share their experiences here.

Thank you in advance

I would also avoid using EPS insulation for ecological and technical/physical building reasons.
For your project, the boundary conditions need to be clear:

- What does the building look like?
- What U-value, etc., is to be achieved? The wall construction would need to be known for this.
- Have other construction measures been taken or are planned?
- Do you plan to carry out any work yourself?

Then your questions could be addressed more precisely, but insulation of the facade alone should not be the only consideration—there are more effective measures.
You can also check under ‘Energiesparhaus,’ where similar questions have been discussed and I have provided comments.

Hello BAUFREUDIG,

Personally, I don’t think anyone can recommend a specific brand for you because it really depends on your house. Some options will be more suitable than others.

Maybe this article will help you a bit: Tante Gurgel + Energieportal 24 + wall insulation

I actually find it quite interesting, as it provides some general information, tips, and tricks!

Best regards, Debbie

I find mineral wool and similar absorbent insulation materials concerning because as soon as they become fully saturated with moisture, their insulating performance drops to almost zero...

This is exactly what is stated in the building material guidelines: in case of a construction halt or if, for example, bricks are stored outside overnight, they must be protected from frost and moisture; otherwise, they will no longer be usable.

Yes, that’s true... but in my opinion, when using any type of external wall insulation system (EWIS) with absorbent materials like mineral wool, rock wool, etc., there is too much that can go wrong and often does...

I see it every day in the city on all the new buildings...
