Hello everyone,

I am considering buying a Billy shelving unit but have some concerns about the quality of workmanship. Especially with affordable furniture, you often hear about poor gluing, warped shelves, or unstable joints.

My question is: How can you best tell in-store or at the dealer if a Billy shelf has poor workmanship?

Are there typical areas where weaknesses can be quickly identified? Which details should I check carefully to avoid being disappointed later?

Even small cracks, uneven surfaces, or wobbly edges could be signs of low quality for me. Could you share your experiences on what to look out for?

Thanks in advance!

How can you reliably identify internal defects?

If you want an objective assessment without relying on feeling, often the only option is material testing or microscopic measurements, which are rarely possible to perform in-store.

However, you can do the following:

- Use a spirit level to check if the side panels are vertical.
- Use a credit card or a sheet of paper along joints to detect gaps.
- Inspect the screw holes with a thin screwdriver to see if they are cleanly made.

Manufacturer indications are also important. Older Billy shelves sometimes had slightly better quality. Newer store-bought items are often mass-produced and show variations.

If you’re serious, comparing two or three units won’t hurt. Especially if you plan to subject them to heavy loads, this check is, in your opinion, essential.

Thank you all!

I take your advice very seriously and will definitely compare several Billy bookcases in person and check them carefully.

I find the tip about slight wobbling and the gap between the back panel particularly helpful, as this really affects stability.

One thing I'm still wondering about: If I order the Billy bookcase online, is there a reliable chance to get a replacement or return the product if defects are found?

Or would you generally advise against buying online if it’s difficult to assess the workmanship?

In general, yes, most online retailers, including IKEA, offer a return or exchange option. However, you should keep a few things in mind:

- Open and inspect the package immediately upon receipt for any damage.
- Report defects and transport damages right away, preferably on the day of delivery.
- Document any damages as accurately as possible with a list (photos are helpful but not required) for customer service.

Experience shows that IKEA’s customer service is quite accommodating with replacements and returns, as long as you act quickly.

If you want to be completely sure, buying in-store with an on-site inspection is always better, especially if you have concerns about quality.

Additional information for online purchases:

There is a 14-day cancellation period that allows you to return the Billy shelf without providing a reason.

A practical challenge is the self-assembly and construction. For returns, the shelf usually needs to be disassembled again and packed in its original packaging.

If you still have doubts, visiting a furniture store is recommended. There, you can better inspect the product and, if necessary, consider other models in person.
