ᐅ Recirculating Hood – What to Consider?

We are currently in the middle of planning our kitchen, and after much consideration, I have decided to go with a recirculation hood.

The hood will be an island hood. I have already noticed there are huge differences in quality. But how do I determine what really matters? Price is a big factor, but I don’t want to end up with a stylish, affordable design hood that basically just moves a little air and doesn’t perform well.

So, I would appreciate some input – what minimum recirculation rate should I be looking for? What else should be taken into account? Are there manufacturers that are clearly recommended or others to avoid?

If tall people live in the household, in my opinion the kitchen island with a cooktop is not really an option.

Why?
A ceiling-mounted hood is located directly on the ceiling. It is controlled with a remote control.

Disadvantages of a downdraft extractor:
With an island solution, the view (usually from the kitchen towards the open living area) is partially blocked during use.
With an island cooktop and recirculation, the air must inevitably be extracted at a high volume flow rate on at least one side, or on two sides at the lower level.

Disadvantage of a ceiling hood:
Due to the large distance from the cooktop, high extractor power is needed to achieve effective ventilation.

I think those are too weak since they are too far away. And the ones that retract are too expensive again.

What exactly blocks the view at a hole in the island? Especially compared to a regular hood, which is definitely right in front of the head...

That is one of the reasons why this is probably becoming too expensive in the current situation.

Well, with airflow rates up to 850 cubic meters per hour (500 cubic feet per hour), they are almost certainly not undersized.

Then you mean the Bora downdraft extractor units. As far as I know, they are patented by Bora and not exactly cheap. Competitors offer the retractable versions.

That’s true. I don’t believe in miracles either.

There are also other manufacturers who offer non-retractable solutions. For example, Neff recently introduced one. Personally, I find even the (very expensive) retractable systems less visually obstructive than a regular hood. But I don’t want to hijack the thread now. What all these solutions have in common is a price well over 1000,-.

Looking at and especially listening to my current range hood, any improvement would be welcome.

None of us are very tall, so I’m less concerned about head clearance. If something hangs from the ceiling, the view is a bit obstructed, but that’s okay. Maybe a nice decorative ceiling molding will be added later, but that’s still undecided.

A downdraft ventilation system is a nice idea, but then my cooktop becomes too expensive, and I usually ventilate while chopping salad anyway.

A ceiling-mounted extractor is unfortunately out of the question – our ceiling height is just over 3 meters (10 feet).

There is the Berbel Skyline for that. But it probably exceeds the budget...
