Hello everyone,

we are currently building a single-family house and have installed recessed downlight housings with a diameter of 180 mm (7 inches) for the general lighting (layout according to the attached plan).
Now we are looking for suitable recessed spotlights to fit these housings.
What luminous intensity would you recommend per spotlight to ensure good visibility without being too harsh?
What beam angles would you suggest to avoid uneven light spots on the floor?

We would greatly appreciate your experiences and recommendations.

In theory, that might be the case, but in practice, I have never had any issues with it. I extensively use low dimming levels below 20%.

I use MDT dimmers with the light sources mentioned above.

It’s no surprise that you don’t experience any problems, since you are using high-quality, compatible products that come at a premium price. Making a general recommendation based on that would be like a Porsche driver saying: “You can always take that corner at 100 mph,” while ignoring that most cars have different chassis characteristics. Anyone trying to follow that advice without understanding the conditions will lose control in the curve.
That’s why I wrote: “You can address the PWM risk with a significant investment if you want a very wide dimming range.” That’s exactly what you are doing at home. An MDT dimmer can easily cost 200€ (approximately $215).

Warm white panel lights fit perfectly into the 180mm (7 inch) junction boxes. They have about 12W and provide sufficient lighting with your wiring layout. These lights are available at a wide range of prices from various suppliers. I have implemented this throughout my entire house and would definitely do it the same way again.
