We have planned underfloor heating for the house (ground floor and upper floor). The basement will be unheated. Currently, only three rooms are planned in the basement: a utility room, a storage room, and a relatively large room that has not yet been assigned a specific purpose.

My electrician suggested that I should ask the heating engineer to run a connection from the heating circuit manifold on the ground floor down to the basement. This could initially be capped off and shut off. If the large room is later used as a hobby room or similar and needs to be heated, a radiator could be connected to the pipes at that time.

Question: Does this make sense? Is it really that simple to do?

What type of heating system do you have?

We are getting an air-to-water heat pump. The provider has not been decided yet (either Viessmann, Junkers, or Wolff).

As I understand it, you would need a very large radiator. Your supply temperature is so low that it would hardly be able to warm up the radiator, let alone heat a large room.

Yes, the low supply temperature made me think twice as well. That's why I wanted to ask here again. The room is about 51m² (550 square feet).

If you only want to warm up the room occasionally, for example when you’re working on a project or something, just install an electric heater on the wall for about 200 euros. Done.
