Hello, I have a question..
We are about to take over a semi-detached house, and we plan to do some extensions. The houses are built the same at the front, but at the back, our neighbor’s house is about 2m (6.5 feet) longer than ours.
At the moment, the house exterior is completely painted orange, but we would like to paint it white. Our terrace will be at the back, where his house extends 2m (6.5 feet) beyond ours, so we will have the neighbor’s house wall next to our terrace. Now my question is, can we also paint the side of his house that faces us (his rear wall) white? Otherwise, it would look very odd.
And another question, he has a satellite dish installed on this rear wall that faces us. If our terrace is there, we will see this "ugly" dish, as it extends onto our side. Can we ask him to move it to the roof?
Before I talk to the neighbor myself, I wanted to ask here first... I hope you understand what I mean; it’s hard to explain.
Regards

You are quite a sweetheart
That doesn’t automatically mean you are allowed to extend—make sure to check with the local building authority and obtain the necessary building permit / planning permission first.
If your neighbor were to change your property according to their preferences, would that be acceptable to you? Of course, you cannot alter their wall without their explicit permission!
Did you carefully inspect the house before you bought it? And knowing that, you were also aware of the dish on that wall. Now, as the "newcomer," you want to impose your ideas on your neighbor? Great, that will make for a good neighborhood if you start complaining right away.
One more side note: If you actually want to apply for permission at the building authority to extend your house towards the garden, you will probably need your neighbor’s consent. In your position, I would consider carefully whether you want to break the porcelain or value a good neighborly relationship.
Kind regards

The duplex belongs to my grandmother, and yes, I have examined it closely.
I also know the neighbor fairly well...
He is aware of our plans.
Of course, I will ask him beforehand before showing up at his door with my lawyer *just kidding*
It’s clear that I want to avoid that kind of situation...
In the end, it’s only about a satellite dish and a small area of facade paint, which we will of course pay for...
We are definitely allowed to build an extension; one was already added in the past. We are only widening it. The length will remain the same. We are widening from 4 m to 7 m (13 feet to 23 feet) in width. The house is 15 m (49 feet) long, and his is 17 m (56 feet).
This is really just about cosmetic issues. I don’t want any conflict with him; he is generally quite reasonable, although I think he might see it differently.
