Good day!

I have an LED ceiling light that provides very nice illumination, but unfortunately, it turned out to be too bright for the small room. The fixture can be controlled and dimmed via DALI. However, I have not planned any wiring for this. At the location where the light is to be installed, there is only a three-core supply cable including the protective earth, starting at the switch next to the door.

Is there any way to make the lamp dimmable? I do have the option to hide something above the (newly to be installed) drywall ceiling, but I wouldn’t be able to access it later.

Practically, the fixture has four terminals (excluding the protective earth): two for mains and two for DALI.

Thank you!

DALI still requires two wires for DA+ and DA-.

Do you have DALI or KNX installed in your house, or is it a standalone lamp that only has DALI connections? There are wireless DALI dimmers available for KNX-RF-S. This means you need a KNX-RF-S gateway and, for example, the paladin 683834 rfs from Hugo Müller. Alternatively, if it should be autonomous, the wDALI dimmer from Lunatone is an option.

Otherwise, I have no bus technology installed in the house. And I must admit that I’m not familiar with it. Is it even possible to do anything with the existing wiring, or is it impossible because there are two wires missing?

Classically, DALI is not really feasible here. You could use the Lunatone wDALI solution, where the lamp is connected to the receiver and the transmitter is placed behind a wall switch. Just Google it, unfortunately I can't provide any links here. This setup would even allow you to keep the current wiring including the wall switch and control the dimming via remote control. The lamp will then always switch on at the last brightness level.

However, if only this single lamp is too bright for you, a simple "quick and dirty" solution would be to use an inline dimmer, like one used for a floor lamp. You won’t be able to dim it as easily, but the lamp will be dimmer. For just one lamp, setting up a full DALI or KNX system seems inefficient to me.

I am hesitant about solutions where something is hidden behind a drywall ceiling, making it inaccessible later on. In principle, I don’t even know yet whether it will actually be such a ceiling again or if it will be made of expanded metal panels. However, I have been chasing the company I contacted for weeks and still have no quote. They probably consider the small room too insignificant. The advantage of the latter solution is that I can remove a panel at any time to access the installations behind it. So, I still have to wait and see.

Is a new light fixture an alternative? Maybe you can use the existing one elsewhere where bright light is needed. There are now many models that can be connected normally and then dimmed using a remote control. Don’t be upset if this turns out to be a bad idea.
