I am currently facing the challenge of properly installing the Ikea METOD kickboards in a room with underfloor heating. I understand that floor areas with underfloor heating have special requirements for materials and their attachment, as the heat distribution must not be compromised and the materials can expand or contract due to temperature changes.
My specific questions are:
- Are there recommended methods or installation options for the METOD kickboards that are particularly suitable for use with underfloor heating?
- Should I plan for special spacers or expansion joints to accommodate temperature-related expansion?
- What should be professionally considered during attachment (gluing, screwing, clips) to ensure both the appearance and the safety of the installation?
- What experiences have you had to avoid problems like warping or poor adhesion afterward?
I look forward to detailed tips or proven approaches that address the combination of Ikea METOD and underfloor heating. Thank you in advance!

Hi,
I recommend not fixing the baseboards directly to the floor so that the underfloor heating can distribute the heat effectively.
Adhesive strips are usually inexpensive, but it’s better to use clips to allow for movement.
A gap of 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) from the wall for expansion is advisable.

Are there any recommended methods or installation options for METOD baseboards that are especially suitable for underfloor heating?Basically, when it comes to baseboards over underfloor heating, thermal expansion is the most important factor. METOD baseboards are usually made of plastic or MDF material with a foil coating, which reacts to temperature changes. Therefore, I recommend:
- Before installation, bring the room to any temperature peaks while the underfloor heating is operating to allow the material to “settle.”
- Ideally, fix the baseboards with clips. These not only provide greater flexibility but also allow for easy removal in case of repairs to the floor.
- Always leave a small expansion gap (about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches)) between the baseboard and the wall. This prevents later warping or detachment.
- Avoid glueing or permanently fixing the baseboards directly to the floor, as this hinders the natural expansion of the heating elements.

Do I need to plan special spacers or expansion joints to accommodate expansion due to temperature changes?Yes, you can easily achieve spacers during installation by using the clips or small washers, for example. It is important to distribute the gaps evenly, especially in corners and at transitions between different types of materials.

What should one properly pay attention to when fastening (gluing, screwing, clips) to ensure both the appearance and safety of the installation?Screwing is possible if the floor is not directly affected and you are mounting on the wall. Simple gluing on the floor is rather critical because of thermal expansion and can cause stress that warps the material.
If you must glue to the floor, I recommend using heat-resistant mounting adhesive, but only in spots and with an expansion joint.
If you can provide more details about your floor construction or the type of underfloor heating, I could offer more targeted advice.
Regarding Ikea METOD kickboards and underfloor heating, there are some clear technical guidelines to follow:
- The key factor is thermal expansion. Kickboards should be installed using clips that allow slight movement while still ensuring a secure fit.
- A 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inch) expansion gap between the kickboard and the wall is essential to reduce stress caused by temperature changes.
- Gluing directly to the floor is only recommended if the adhesive is temperature-resistant and flexible.
- Screwing into the wall is the safest option, as long as no pipes or cables are damaged.
Additionally, I recommend checking the technical documentation of the underfloor heating system. Some systems prohibit permanent fastenings on the screed due to the risk of thermal bridges.
I also advise conditioning the kickboards before installation to minimize material stress.
If you want high-quality results, use only the original Ikea METOD mounting hardware and supplement it with plastic spacers.

I have installed METOD baseboards in several apartments with underfloor heating myself. During this process, I realized how important a combination of good planning and careful execution is.
First: Before you start, make sure the underfloor heating is turned off and the surface is dry. This protects adhesives and materials.
Then I recommend installation using clips, as they allow for thermal expansion and make it easier to remove the baseboards if needed.
Adjust the positioning slightly to minimize stress. Plan for an expansion gap of at least 2 mm (0.08 inches), especially at corners. From my experience, attaching the baseboard to the wall rather than the floor helps avoid pressure on the heating system.
Also important: If the baseboards shift after installation, the entire appearance can be affected. So, it’s better to work precisely.
When choosing fastening materials, be sure to use heat-resistant clips or screws. And again: never glue directly onto the heated screed, as this can cause problems in the long term.
