Hello everyone,
I want to cover my terrace (about 2/3 partially covered) with 90x90x2 cm (35x35x0.8 inches) ceramic tiles.
Currently, there is a concrete slab with a bitumen membrane (as protection against rising moisture from below) and almost no slope.
Current situation:
The terrace has a maximum construction height of about 15 cm (6 inches), including the tiles up to the top edge of the sliding door.
The length from the house wall to the garden is about 5 meters (16.5 feet) due to the slope.
The terrace is not bordered, meaning the ends on two sides are "open" and should seamlessly connect with the garden.
How should the further construction proceed?
I have read that one can or should either:
Apply a sloped screed and then lay a drainage mat followed by the terrace tiles,
Or
Use drainage concrete applied wet-on-wet with the tiles.
But then there is the problem that water may collect on the concrete slab. Should water be expected to seep through the tiles and drainage concrete?
What should be considered regarding frost protection?
How should the connection to the open ends toward the garden be done?
Key points about waterproofing, drainage, etc.?
Because if the ends are sealed, any water cannot be drained away, right?
Thank you very much.
I am looking forward to some expert feedback.
