ᐅ Issues with Static Electricity on KALLAX Shelves – Solutions?

loluteHello everyone,
Lately, I’ve been experiencing a quite annoying problem with static electricity on my IKEA KALLAX shelves. Whenever I touch the shelves, I feel a small visible spark or my hair immediately stands on end. This happens especially during the cool, dry months and is really uncomfortable.
I suspect that the combination of the materials used, the indoor climate conditions (very dry air), and perhaps friction from clothing or carpets plays a role. Now I’m wondering: What practical methods are there to noticeably reduce or even completely prevent static electricity on the KALLAX shelves?
Has anyone had good experience with tips or tricks, perhaps even specific products or measures? I’m also open to chemical-physical explanations but mainly need effective, practical solutions for everyday life.
Thanks in advance!

Hey lolute,
static electricity can be quite a prankster in dry rooms. 😄 Especially with furniture that has painted surfaces, like the KALLAX, you might get a little shock when you least expect it!
What helps are small humidifiers to increase the humidity – a classic solution against static buildup. You can also treat the surface with an anti-static spray. These products reduce the charge without altering the appearance of the shelving.
One more tip: try to reduce wearing synthetic fabrics when working a lot around the shelving, as they often cause static friction. Sometimes using a bit of fabric softener during washing can also help lessen the problem.
All in all: don’t get nervous, this is a common phenomenon that can be easily managed. Good luck 🙂

What helps are, for example, small humidifiers to increase humidity – this is a classic method against static electricity.I can only agree with that; humidity is the key factor. Static electricity mainly occurs in environments with less than 40% relative humidity. Maintaining a constant humidity level between 45-55% already brings significant relief.
Additionally, I recommend the following measures:
- Use anti-static cloths for furniture; they bind electrical charges.
- For persistent static buildup, occasionally wiping the shelves with a mild, damp cloth can help to dissipate the electrical charge.
It is important to keep an eye on synthetic materials often found in the surroundings (such as carpets or upholstery), as they can amplify the effects.
If you like, I can also provide more detailed information on anti-static products specifically designed for furniture.

Try to reduce wearing synthetic fibers when handling the shelf a lot.I’m also curious if the material of the KALLAX shelf itself has been treated in any way that promotes static buildup. For example, does it have a plastic coating? Or is it more like regular wood-based panel material?
Looking forward to your insights so I can respond accordingly.
