Hello,

we are currently planning our outdoor area.
We are still unsure about the best way to create privacy screening towards the neighbor’s house. We have quite a curious neighbor who always stands on their terrace whenever we are outside.
Of course, the adjacent playground should remain accessible for our child.

We find it a bit difficult to decide the best solution. At first, we thought about bamboo plants. They grow quickly and tall. But do they grow dense enough to provide privacy screening?

Or should we go for a wooden fence?
It’s tricky.
Maybe you have suggestions and ideas for us, thank you very much.
Best regards

You are allowed 2m (6.5 ft) from the boundary. And whether it is permitted or not, who cares.

I think we definitely need to add some plants on the playground side so our little son can easily get there.
We live in RLP and I hope that a tall fence (1.8–2 m) (6–6.5 ft) with greenery in between is allowed.

Behind our main terrace, I also think we need some extra privacy protection. In two weeks, we will have a terrace roof installed, so we’ll see how that works.
What do you think about two raised wooden beds, each 1 m wide (3.3 ft), with nice greenery? Basically on the side where the pool is now.
Lounge furniture will go against the house wall, probably made from pallets.

Embed steel reinforcement mesh into the concrete around fence posts and use it to support climbing ivy. After about a year, it becomes opaque, evergreen, and requires little maintenance. We have the same setup in our garden.

We built raised garden beds ourselves next to the terrace and planted them, which makes the terrace feel cozier.

If in doubt, it’s the neighbor who might involve the local authorities over a privacy screen. Regarding my advice yesterday on

I assumed it was a peeping-type neighbor who just needs to know everything because otherwise they would be bored. If their motivation is different (for example, anxiety that the long-haired people who built next to them and whom they’ve never seen at church might be stealing grass from the poor cows or plotting a revolution), then inviting them and their spouse over for a talk might actually be the best approach. Not every problem requires a technical solution, such as building a fence in this case.
