Hello everyone,

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but no other category seemed to fit this topic.

My question is for those who have recently moved in or have been living in their houses for a while: What are your monthly ongoing costs, and how are they made up?

It might be helpful to include details like the size of the house, how many people live there (and their ages), the country you live in, etc.

I’m thinking of all regular expenses related to the house, such as electricity, water, waste collection, taxes, insurance, and so on. It would be great if someone could share their experience. If there is already a list of such costs somewhere, I’d appreciate a tip on where to find it.

Thanks!

Daniela

Try entering operating costs into the HBF search. Although it mostly contains discussions about heating costs, there are also some threads about ongoing expenses 🙂

A good reference is also the previous breakdown of additional costs.

However, this does not include the non-recoverable expenses.

Basically, there will always be disputes about the amount of additional costs. The topic of reserves is often debated. Many people who build new homes say they do not set aside reserves during the first few years since the property is new, while others save varying amounts.

Electricity: usage-based, monthly
Water: usage-based, yearly
Waste disposal: usage-based, yearly
Property tax: varies depending on many factors, quarterly
Telecommunication: usage-based, monthly
Insurance: yearly
Heating maintenance: fixed amount yearly, maintenance interval every 2 years
Reserve funds: for us 1€/m2 (1€/10.8 sq ft) per month

Gas 50
Electricity 90
Water 20
Sewage 20
Internet/Phone 40
TV license fee 18
Garbage collection 15
Property tax 32

Plus insurance and savings.
That’s roughly the biggest expenses for us.

2 people, just under 180m² (1937 ft²). Although electricity is relatively high due to working from home 4 days a week with a PC.

On the other hand, gas is relatively low; I expect a back payment followed by a monthly increase to 60 or 65€.
