lageoffrey21 Aug 2024 09:12Hello everyone,
I recently started fitting our kitchen with Ikea Metod cabinets and am now facing the challenge of precisely aligning and securely attaching the Metod doors. I have noticed that despite the adjustable hinges, the doors do not always align perfectly, especially when multiple doors are next to each other, where small misalignments become very noticeable.
I’m interested in how you ensure all doors hang neatly side by side, with gaps that are neither too large nor uneven, and how you keep the doors firmly fixed over time. Do you use any special tools or tricks to achieve precise adjustment? Especially with Metod doors, which can be fairly heavy, I wonder if additional fastenings are necessary or if the standard hinge is actually sufficient.
I look forward to your experiences and tips on the precise alignment and optimal fixing of Ikea Metod doors.

To align Metod doors, you should adjust the screws on the hinge carefully; the two adjustment screws allow for vertical and horizontal corrections.
For a stable attachment, tighten the screws firmly but not too much, as this can damage the material.
A simple screwdriver is usually sufficient.

Hello, from experience I can say that precisely aligning the Metod doors can really test your patience.
First, you should fully mount the hinges and roughly position the doors, then slightly adjust the horizontal screws on all hinges to achieve even gaps. Vertical adjustments help if the door sits too high or too low.
Important: When installing multiple doors side by side, always allow a gap of about 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches) to prevent stress when closing.
Regarding fastening: As far as I know, the supplied hinges are sturdy enough. If you notice the doors wobble after frequent use, you can add small wooden strips on the inside of the cabinet to stabilize the door.
One more tip: Check the hinges again a few days after installation to ensure nothing has shifted.

Hello everyone,
I would like to share a structured guide for precise alignment and optimal installation of Ikea Metod doors, which has worked well for me.
1. Preparation: All hinges should be mounted and the doors roughly hung in place.
2. Rough alignment: Use the lateral adjustment screw to move the door horizontally. It is important to maintain consistent gap widths from left to right.
3. Vertical adjustment: Use the vertical adjustment at the hinges to correct the height of the doors so that the top and bottom edges are aligned.
4. Depth adjustment: Some Metod hinges also allow depth adjustment, so the door sits flush with the cabinet frame.
5. Check gaps: Ideal gap widths are about 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches) to avoid binding.
6. Securing: The supplied screws are generally sufficient. For thicker doors, I recommend securing them with a thread-locking compound after adjustment to prevent loosening.
7. Readjustment: After a few days of use, everything may settle slightly — check again and adjust if necessary.
Common mistakes:
- Screwing too tightly, which stresses the material and the hinge
- Uneven spacing
- Neglecting readjustment, which often makes the difference
I hope this overview helps you!

Are there any recommendations on how to best check and maintain these gap widths? Do you use any special measuring tools for this?
I also have the impression that the lower hinges need to be adjusted differently than the upper ones, which probably causes some tension as well.

Adjust depth: Some Metod hinges also allow depth adjustment so that the door aligns flush with the cabinet body. How exactly does this depth adjustment work? Do you have to measure very precisely, or can it be done more by feel?
Looking forward to more tips.
To ensure precise and consistent gap widths, it is recommended to use a feeler gauge set or simple spacers in the suggested sizes (2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches)). This allows the exact gap between the doors and the cabinet body to be adjusted step by step.
The depth on Metod hinges is usually controlled by the adjustment screw at the hinge base. Depending on the direction of rotation, the door can be moved either closer to the cabinet body or pulled further out.
It is advisable to first roughly align the door stop, then fine-tune it, and finally lock the hinges slightly to prevent any movement during use.
Additionally, using a spirit level can help ensure that the doors are not only visually but also technically level.
