Hello, I am planning to build a house next year. To make things easier, I am looking for tips from people who have gone through the building process themselves, based on their experiences.
I am not looking for basic advice such as “Make sure to submit the building permit / planning permission on time, as the processing can take a long time.” Instead, I’m interested in practical tips like (not entirely serious): “We placed a tub of water in front of the door so no one would track dirty feet onto the street.” or “I built a small tool cart from pallets with a built-in work light and power strip, which was very helpful.”

Hello,
you still have some time until next year.
So here are my helpful tips:
Talk actively with other homeowners, consider visiting some familiar homeowners or even helping out occasionally.
Read actively here in the forum. Even in topics that don’t seem interesting from the title, you can often find very useful information.
To sum it up briefly: Engage thoroughly with the topic of homebuilding. Unfortunately, no one can provide you with a ready-made recipe book.

Tips from Homeowners- In hindsight, I would make a greater effort to document even more thoroughly and better. Not just endless photos (which I have), but also carefully keeping a construction diary that records all agreements and decisions.
- A quality control that is accountable only to you is essential (expert assessor or similar; architect).
- Visit reference buildings beforehand and talk to the residents.
- Also engage in conversations with the subcontractors several levels down, especially with the respective foremen and so on.
- Double the initially planned financial buffer; also keep funds available for the period after moving in.
- When making changes to the fittings, try to consider all the consequences (after the construction plans were completed, we changed the stair railing and balustrade on the upper floor, which ideally should have been taken into account when planning the stairwell opening; but no one did. Not a big deal, but still a detail).
