Hello everyone,

I’m not sure if this topic fits here – it’s not really about landscaping.

An underground cable has already been installed from our house to the cistern to operate a submersible pump. This is currently working perfectly. Now we are planning to install a wallbox for an electric car.

My question is whether the existing cable can be used for both the wallbox and the pump, or if a second cable needs to be pulled through the conduit. An electrician could split the cable accordingly (wallbox / cistern).

Details of the existing cable / protection:
  • Underground cable NYY-J 5×2.5 mm², length approx. 18 m (59 feet)
  • RCD (residual current device) 25 A / 0.03 A, 2-pole
  • Designed for max. 2 circuits (230 V)
  • Currently only the submersible pump is connected
Specifically, my questions are:
  • Is the cable basically suitable for a wallbox?
  • Can the wallbox and submersible pump be operated in parallel on it?
  • Or is a separate cable required for safety or regulatory reasons?
I would be very grateful for expert assessments.

Best regards Karl

How much power does the pump require, and how should the wallbox be able to charge?

The rated power of the pump is 1.1 kW. However, the pump only runs when the connected water tap is opened.

With your question, do you mean how fast the wallbox should charge? If so, I haven’t given it much thought. It’s only about whether the cable basically works.

For an 11kW wallbox, this is definitely borderline but possible. If rewiring, they would generally recommend 4mm² (11 AWG) instead.

Hello,

a wallbox must be individually protected, and no other devices are allowed between the circuit breaker and the wallbox. So using just one cable will be difficult. You will need to install a sub-distribution board on site. A 2.5 mm2 conductor is also too small for an 11 kW wallbox over a cable length of 18 m (59 feet). The minimum should be 4 mm2, but considering the length, I would rather go for 6 mm2.

Best regards,
Andreas

All right, then I will hire a professional company. Thank you all!
