Hello, I’m Christina (new to the forum)!

We are currently building a house and, once the project is completed, are considering adding a pool in the garden. What are your experiences? Can it be done as a DIY project? What type of heating have you chosen? How did it go for you?

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Christina

Last year, we had an Intex pool on the rooftop terrace. They are affordable and perfectly sufficient for cooling off.

You can do everything yourself, but the question is whether you want to or can. There are even people who dig their pool by hand with shovels and wheelbarrows. You need to consider how much you want to spend and whether it’s financially feasible. We had a pool professionally installed last year, which is the easiest option. We don’t have any heating yet, but with the hot summer, the water stayed warm until September, always between 24 and 27°C (75 and 81°F). We insulated the pool walls and covered the pool when it wasn’t in use.

Modern house patio with pool, dining set under covered area; balcony above.

TE does not seem to be active anymore; it was a one-hit wonder!

Hello everyone,

I’m using this post to ask a question:

When building our single-family house, we would like to at least prepare for a future pool. What should we consider or what do we need for this?

My first thoughts are about the utilities:
- Electricity – Is a three-phase power connection necessary?
- Water/sewage – Is this absolutely required, or can the pool be filled later, for example, using a garden hose?

Would empty conduit pipes be a more cost-effective alternative than installing the actual pipes now? Could the necessary water lines be run later through these conduits?

Thanks in advance! 🙂

I’m mainly thinking about the connections:
- Electricity – Do you need a high-voltage connection?

Would empty conduits possibly be a more cost-effective alternative than laying the actual pipes right away? Could you later run the necessary water pipes through these conduits?

We had our pool fully installed right away (had it done 🙂. I don’t remember all the details, but the electrician, plumber, and sewer contractor all connected the pool with the house and the technical room (in our basement). So I would really think beforehand about what kind of pool you want and how it will be operated. When we backwash or drain our pool, it goes through the sewer, and a larger lifting station was necessary inside the house. You can definitely fill it with a garden hose (our guys used a hydrant because otherwise it would have taken forever), but the question is more about how you get the water out again if needed.

Whether empty conduits would work for running pipes later is something you should ask a pool builder and your plumber (you can always get a pool quote and ask lots of questions there). But honestly, I would seriously consider whether you really want the pool (and of course whether you can afford it, since these things are unfortunately quite expensive) and if so, build it right away so the garden doesn’t get dug up again in a few years (the excavator has to access the property somehow), or just skip it and consider a freestanding pool after a few years.

My two cousins each built their pools almost entirely by themselves, years after the house was built. So it’s definitely possible without preparation inside the house, but since those two are very handy and know lots of skilled tradespeople who help out for a beer, I don’t know how easy it actually would be for regular desk workers like me 🙂

Where should the technical equipment be installed? Inside the house or near the pool?

For the pool control system and pump(s), no high-voltage power supply is required. However, this is necessary for devices like a heat pump.

If you want to use the house heating system, it must be properly sized for this purpose.

Consider water supply, sewage, electricity, empty conduits for spotlights, control cables, and so on.

Refilling the pool with a garden hose is not a good idea, as you would need to constantly monitor the water level. Do yourself a favor and install a controllable pump with a large filter right away. Use a pool control system with automatic dosing. This way, you can enjoy your pool comfortably, maintain excellent water quality, and won’t become a slave to your pool.

How large do you want it to be?
