Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the choice of windows.
I always assumed we would go with uPVC windows because of the lower maintenance required.

However, our architect is completely convinced of wooden windows.

Now I would like to hear your opinion: uPVC windows or wooden windows? Advantages and disadvantages?

So depending on the material and thickness, you then have specified values that have practically remained the same forever?

Yes, there are also wooden windows where one mullion of the glued frame is made of cork, which slightly lowers the U-value. In my opinion, however, the thermal conductivity of wood is sufficient to avoid disadvantages such as thermal bridges.

If choosing wooden windows, I would go for wood-aluminum ones. This eliminates the need for painting, and the aluminum cladding is very durable. However, the prices should not be underestimated. That’s why we ultimately opted for uPVC windows.

We also have wooden windows, and I simply find them beautiful. In terms of texture, even high-quality plastic windows cannot compare. Additionally, wooden windows have an advantage from an ecological perspective.

In our case, the rest of the house is also made entirely of wood. I think it is a great material. For those who don’t care about ideological aspects, plastic is probably the choice today. I believe wooden windows have now become true niche products.

I also think it’s very ideological. I only touch my windows occasionally at the handle, so the feel of the frame doesn’t matter to me. That’s why I chose plastic, as it is much easier to maintain.

It is primarily a matter of personal taste and budget. Personally, I find plastic windows to look cheap and cold. Wood looks much better. Modern wooden windows (e.g., Meranti) are very high quality and generally not as maintenance-intensive as older generations of wooden windows.

I wouldn’t call it a niche product. I don’t know any statistics, but I would say that in higher-end homes, wood or aluminum is usually used rather than plastic.
