Hello everyone,
we are currently planning our outdoor area. We have a full south-facing exposure, so it gets a lot of sun in summer.

At the moment, we want to use flower boxes integrated into Euro pallet furniture and plant the right plants there. Do you have any recommendations on what to plant that won’t dry out quickly? The problem is that the planter boxes only allow for a small amount of soil – does it even make sense to plant anything there? They are exposed to the sun all day.

Thank you in advance.

I have 50-liter (13-gallon) containers on the south side that need to be watered daily in the summer. The smaller pots definitely require watering even more often.

In the prairie garden, sedum and similar plants grow well without watering. I have only watered mine twice this year.

I think lavender grows fairly well too, at least it spread like weeds on my property before we cleared everything. No one watered it all summer (except for rain), but the lavender thrived.

It had the chance to develop deeper roots. Unfortunately, this is not possible in pots. The difference between container planting and ground planting is enormous.

Okay, that sounds reasonable.

Perhaps grasses like switchgrass can also thrive under these conditions. The location is suitable.
In full sun, these do well for me:
Switchgrass
Asian sage
Pringle’s aster
Bog reed grass
Digitalis-shaped beard grass
Candelabra speedwell
Echinacea

Make sure to cover the soil with mulch. Keep in mind that some mulch is better than none and helps prevent drying out a bit.

Purslane is also pretty if you like colorful plants.
