Good afternoon,

I would like to create a privacy screen on a terrace by planting in a row of troughs no wider than 40cm (16 inches). The height is limited to about 150cm (59 inches) due to an awning.

Grasses and similar plants would be nice, but of course, they should not take until midsummer to reach a size that provides effective privacy.

Does anyone have tips on which types/species of plants would work well here?

Thank you!

Troughs basically act as root barriers, so bamboo could be a good fit. However, they consume a lot of water but stay green during winter.

For a Phyllostachys bamboo, not in the long run 😉 — it will break through any trough. But there are great Fargesia species.

I assume planting in clumps instead of covering the entire area for tubs 😉

I have ivy. Windproof and provides privacy. On a trellis.

If you can tolerate it. The one from the neighbor grows over the wall, and I always need someone to trim it.

What do you mean by that?

I always prune it back so it does not grow onto the house.
