Hello
We want to plant a roughly 45-meter (150-foot) long area with plants that provide privacy screening. We are considering Thuja Smaragd. They should be relatively low-maintenance and offer good privacy.
Do you have any other suggestions?

We have a mixed flowering hedge and really like it. There is something blooming throughout the year, providing an additional food source especially for butterflies, bees, and bumblebees.
We had the plants installed two years ago, and they have already grown very well. Our lilacs, in particular, are now taller than us.

HilfeHilfe1 Aug 2016 07:21Hello, oh my 2-year-old post is still alive
I can now speak from experience; we are very happy with the “cemetery hedge” made of Thuja. Planted last spring, purchased from a nursery. We have a total of 95 plants, about 2.5 per meter (0.8 per foot) of length.
Last year was tough due to the extreme summer. You have to water a lot during the first three years; last year we lost about 16 plants. Fortunately, the nursery replaced them almost for free as a goodwill gesture. This year they are already thriving. My wife also planted some bamboo. It is said that this type of root system is not aggressive, but we will see.

Always keep them well trimmed (or do it yourself). We have an 18-year-old thuja hedge in our garden, a monster, 1m (3 ft) deep, about 4-5m (13-16 ft) long on three sides of the garden with only small gaps, which takes up a lot of space. It used to be 4.5m (15 ft) tall because the previous tenants didn’t maintain it. The landlord kindly had it cut down to 3.5m (11.5 ft) before we moved in, but it still overwhelms me. Unfortunately, we are (hopefully only temporarily) not allowed to remove it.

So, I just stopped by the gardener briefly. Probably not the right place. Every other word was boxwood, boxwood, and more boxwood. He proudly showed me his stock. For 28 meters (31 yards), he would charge me 5 plants per meter. They are currently pruned in a square shape, measuring 20cm x 20cm x 20cm (8 inches x 8 inches x 8 inches).
28 meters (31 yards) * 5 plants = €1,350. According to the "grower" (it’s hard to describe him any other way), growth in our region is about 10cm (4 inches) per year. The first pruning is free and will be done by him at no cost. The second pruning I would do myself under his guidance. That would be included in the "package". I would have to plant them myself; he would show me how to do it at his place.
Well, let’s see what else is available. Thuja is currently not an option.
