Hello,
we are building a single-family house in the Swabian region.
Due to the location of the plot and the design of the house, we have decided to go with a carport.
The driveway is on the south side, and the main entrance is on the east side. This means the carport will be directly in front of the main entrance door and is also intended to serve as a covered entrance area.
Additionally, we want to integrate a small storage room of about 2.3m x 2m (7.5 ft x 6.5 ft) inside the carport to store bicycles and a lawnmower. Is that size sufficient?
The carport will have a length of 7.5m (25 ft) and a width of 3.5m (11.5 ft). Unfortunately, the plot does not allow for a larger size.
Could you please take a look at my plan and let me know if the design seems realistic or if there are any improvements you would suggest? Also, where should the entrance to the storage room be located: on the left side or from the front?
Thank you very much!

A photoelectric sensor is also a nice idea...
Does he then park far enough inside the storage shed to prevent access from the outside?
The sensor could also be triggered from outside by unauthorized persons...No, he parks quite close to the entrance. It would have to be controlled so that the gate opens only when triggered by the outside sensor while the mower is on its way. But I just realized the simplest solution is probably a push button at the charging station that stays pressed as long as the mower is docked. When the button is released (as soon as the mower leaves the station), the gate opens and only closes again when the button is pressed (when the mower returns to the station). This is probably the simplest and most reliable solution! Glad we talked about it 😀
I’ll revisit the carport topic 😉
I would definitely keep the entrance area clear and move the carport back as far as possible so that the front door and some space behind it remain unobstructed. The space is tight anyway, but you need room in front of the entrance and you don’t want to scratch your vehicle 😉
Even if the car is parked in the carport, it will be difficult to maneuver bicycles past it.
Is there a possibility to place a garden shed to the left of the driveway at the front, meaning in front of the house? This could also serve as a privacy screen towards the south-facing garden, and no car would disturb the children when maneuvering. 🙂
Our neighbors, who also have north-south oriented plots, all placed their carports right at the front boundary—so no driveway, only a footpath passing to the left of the carport leading to the front door.
However, personally, I don’t like it when the front door is partly blocked by a building structure.
If the plot is large enough at the front, facing south, it might make sense to position the carport perpendicular to the driveway, keeping the driveway where it is but turning the driveway into the carport by 90 degrees. This then provides privacy along its length, removes the need for a long driveway, and allows for a more flexible garden layout.

Placing the carport right at the front of the property is unfortunately not possible either. The building zone is centered on the plot. A 5m (16 ft) strip behind the house (planting restriction) must remain undeveloped, as well as 5m (16 ft) at the front. The property is only 370 sqm (3980 sq ft), so there isn’t much space left. But having the garden shed at the front might be an idea.
The storage shed isn’t meant to hold much either. Mainly the kids’ bicycles and the lawn mower. Although my husband wouldn’t mind having a robotic mower 😉
We also have a basement where we can keep items that aren’t used daily.
Our neighbor built their house quite differently. The garage is attached directly to the house, and the entrance is on the south side. We never considered that idea. It doesn’t look bad at all, but now it’s too late.

I would then move the storage room or tool shed to the left of the driveway in front of the house. This should also be possible outside the building permit / planning permission area. The door should face the driveway or the house, allowing enough space for maneuvering. This would also provide some privacy screening towards the garden 🙂
Quick reply on the go 🙂
