Hello,
we are building a single-family house in the Swabian region.
Due to the location of the plot and the design of the house, we have decided to go with a carport.
The driveway is on the south side, and the main entrance is on the east side. This means the carport will be directly in front of the main entrance door and is also intended to serve as a covered entrance area.
Additionally, we want to integrate a small storage room of about 2.3m x 2m (7.5 ft x 6.5 ft) inside the carport to store bicycles and a lawnmower. Is that size sufficient?
The carport will have a length of 7.5m (25 ft) and a width of 3.5m (11.5 ft). Unfortunately, the plot does not allow for a larger size.
Could you please take a look at my plan and let me know if the design seems realistic or if there are any improvements you would suggest? Also, where should the entrance to the storage room be located: on the left side or from the front?
Thank you very much!

The space will be very tight if several bicycles and a lawn mower need to fit in. A lawn mower takes up a lot of room.
Otherwise, the dimensions of the carport are quite good.
However, the following would bother me: Nowadays, a typical car is about 2 meters (6.6 feet) wide. To allow the passenger to exit comfortably, you usually park about 50 cm (20 inches) away from the wall. This means the distance between the car and the door is only about 1 meter (3.3 feet), which can feel quite cramped.
Another point is that the entrance area might feel rather dark, but that depends on the carport roof.

It will be tight, unfortunately, that’s what I fear as well. But the alternative would be to omit the storage area completely, which would allow the car to park further forward and keep the entrance area clear. However, then we would have no space left for the bicycles and so on.
Unfortunately, no garden shed is allowed at the back of the house due to a planting requirement according to the building plan. 🙁
The carport roof MUST be greened.

Sounds like well-meaning people have once again overregulated life... 😡

Doc.Schnaggls17 Oct 2014 14:28Hello,
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous posts. A space of 2.3 x 2 m (7.5 x 6.6 ft) is definitely too small for the intended use.
If having a room is absolutely necessary, I would consider extending it across the entire width of the carport and either placing the trash bins inside or finding another location for them. Of course, you would then need two doors—one leading to the garden and one to the carport side.
The second option would be to keep the carport completely open and, for example, hang the bicycles from the ceiling to save space—although this can be difficult for children.
A small (and lightweight) electric lawn mower could also be stored in the basement.
Regards,
Dirk
P.S. Another possibility for the lawn mower is an electric robotic mower. It usually parks itself at its charging station outdoors and “calls for help” if someone tries to remove it from the property. However, these devices are not exactly cheap...
