pinpeHello everyone, I am currently planning my kitchen using Ikea Metod modules and intend to include a kitchen island that is both functional and features a seating area.
I am wondering about the best way to design and plan such a kitchen island myself, especially regarding the combination of storage, workspace, and seating.
Are there any recommendations on how to make the most efficient use of the Metod units to optimize the space? Also, how have you approached planning the seating height and walkways to ensure everything remains practical?
I would appreciate any advice on choosing the modules, the height of the countertop in combination with the seating area, and possibly useful additional solutions like shelves or partitions.

Hello pinpe, I think your question is very well formulated and important because a Metod kitchen island with a seating area requires careful attention to several details.
First, it is essential to design the island so that it provides enough storage space while still leaving sufficient work surfaces. I recommend using the classic Metod base cabinets, as they are flexible and can be easily combined.
Regarding the seating height, a height of about 90 cm (35 inches) is generally recommended when using bar stools. This means the countertop for the seating area should be approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) higher than the regular work surface (standard countertop height is about 85 cm (33 inches)).
On the topic of clearance: To move around the island without restrictions, plan for at least 100 cm (39 inches) of space to other furniture or walls. This ensures ergonomic working and easy use of the seating area.
For additional solutions: Some add shelves or open compartments on the side of the island for cookbooks or decorations, creating extra storage and an attractive look.
I am happy to assist further with specific measurements or planning if you provide your room dimensions.

Hello pinpe,
to address your question from a more technical perspective, several factors need to be carefully considered when designing a Metod kitchen island yourself:
- Module choice: For the seating area, it is advisable to use wider drawer or base cabinet modules to provide sufficient legroom. Ideally, the seating surface should be placed on a slightly raised countertop, for example with an additional 4 cm (1.5 inch) thick wooden or stone slab, to increase the seat height by about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches).
- Planning the seat height: A standard countertop height of 85 cm (33.5 inches) is too low for comfortable seating—the seat height of a bar or counter is usually around 105-110 cm (41-43 inches). Therefore, combining a lower kitchen work area (e.g., 85 cm) with a raised seating area is recommended.
- Clearance width: The distance between the island and adjacent furniture should be at least 100 cm (40 inches), otherwise working and seating with chairs can be hindered—more space is even better, especially in smaller kitchens.
- Stability and connections: The island should be securely anchored, as sitting and leaning cause increased loads. Planning for electrical outlets and possibly water connections or built-in appliances in the island is a big advantage.
- Example: A base cabinet 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide with a countertop on top, plus enough storage space underneath as a base—this works well.
I’m curious: How large is your kitchen? Do you want the island free-standing or attached? And is the seating area intended mainly for quick breakfasts or also for longer meals?

And is the seating area intended mainly for quick breakfasts or also for longer meals? Thanks for the detailed reply! My kitchen is about 12 m² (130 sq ft), and I want the island to be free-standing. The seating area is mainly for breakfast and occasional snacks, so it’s not really meant for larger meals with several people.
I want to stay flexible when cooking, so storage and easy access are important. The idea of having two different countertop heights (standard work area and a higher seating area) sounds very practical.
Does anyone know how the Metod cabinet fronts can be visually combined with an additional countertop at a different height without issues? And which countertop materials work best for the raised seating area to ensure a durable solution?
Several notes on combining Ikea Metod kitchen island modules with a seating area:
- Height adjustment: As mentioned before, raising the countertop in the seating area is advisable. This is often done using wooden panels, solid strips, or special attachments. With Metod, it is common to simply place the new countertop on top of the existing base cabinets so that the cabinet fronts remain continuous.
- Appearance and edges: Make sure the new countertop either matches the Ikea surfaces in color or intentionally creates a contrast. A harmonious overall look results from having the same countertop thickness or matching edge profiles.
- Seating area materials: For the raised section, particularly durable and scratch-resistant materials such as HPL laminate boards or solid wood with surface sealing are suitable. These are easy to maintain and long-lasting.
- Fixing: To prevent wobbling, the raised countertop must be securely fastened. Screw brackets or special Ikea-compatible attachments are recommended.
- For small spaces, folding stools are a space-saving option if the seating area is not used all the time.
Overall, I recommend considering the load-bearing capacity of all kitchen components during construction, especially when integrating seating areas that are subjected to different stresses than regular work surfaces.
