Hello everyone,
I have already read similar threads on this topic, but many people were looking for something specific (3D visualization, multi-level objects, etc.).
My wife and I now have very clear ideas about how we want the floor plan of our new build to look. Since we apparently lack the ability to communicate our exact wishes precisely to potential general contractors, I would like to take the floor plan design into my own hands. I find SweetHome3D frustrating because, in my opinion, it is not intuitive and rather complicated to use. I just need simple software where I can quickly draw walls, measure the remaining square meters (square feet) of each enclosed room (no furniture, 3D visualization, or anything like that needed), and place windows and doors.
Can anyone help me (preferably with free software) or give recommendations?
Best regards!

BauNoobie10 Apr 2019 16:07Thank you for the many responses. I will take a closer look at homebyme and homestyler over the weekend.
I actually find my ideas quite simple and well thought out when I explain them to friends and family, but the new drafts from the general contractors take forever and, secondly, they are just not exactly what I had envisioned.
If I produce something over the weekend, I will share it here.

If the builder doesn’t understand what you mean, there’s something wrong with your ideas. Everything else can be explained with simple words and additional sketches on a desk pad. Misunderstandings arise when a non-professional tries to explain ideas that are disproportionate, non-functional, or unfeasible.
Use homebyme, but show it to us first before you embarrass yourself with the builder.

would that be too much work for a first impression 😀Explain it to me: Is it more work with pencil and paper than on a PC or tablet?
I can make you a sketch before your computer is even turned on... I honestly don’t see how drawing with a pencil is supposed to be work 😉

Besides, I find it easier to orient myself in 3DFirst of all, you always start by drawing in 2D... 3D models can be viewed once weeks or days of "work" have led to a successful result.

From the tens of thousands of posts I have read here over more than two years of almost daily forum visits, I can tell you one thing for sure: the stubbornness or lack of understanding of a general contractor’s planner/designer is a constant; that means it is not lessened by how detailed, professional, or clear a client’s communication is.
Posts like: "Hello, I’m back again. Attached you’ll find the latest drawings from our architect. Unfortunately, the idiot still didn’t move the windows / rotate the stairs / remove the double sink / ... / ... even though we discussed this fifty-something times" are written just as often by clients working with their “architects” in 3D Dolby Surround Cinemascope Fujicolor as by those who edit screenshots of catalog floor plans with Paintbrush’s eraser tool or even scribble edits by hand.

/QUOTE] It looks like you are more skilled with pencil than I am, which is perfectly fine 😉

Seriously and not ironically meant: do you have any tips to prevent this?
It hasn’t happened to us so far, but with detailed floor plan design, it could happen to us too—who knows :/
