Hello,

I am currently planning a garden shed and have come across a question that seems simple but I couldn’t find an answer to despite searching online. Most information I find relates to the distance from neighbors and the maximum height. However, I want to know if you would place a garden shed or storage shed right on the boundary line?

I have heard several opinions recommending a distance of 50-80 cm (20-31 inches) to allow access around the shed for cleaning and maintenance. Do you agree with that? Personally, I would prefer to place it directly against the fence to save space, but I can also understand the argument for having space to walk around it.

In my case, the shed would be located in a corner, meaning on two sides there would be a fence or directly the neighbor’s property.

What are your thoughts?

Thank you. Either way, the house would not replace the fence but stand "right next to the fence." Storing things there would probably upset the neighbor more, as they would be looking at stones and wood, but of course, it is an option, if necessary with a privacy screen on the fence.

Oh, I see, then from my side that would certainly be fine. If the neighbor can look directly at it, that wouldn’t be very elegant. Still, I think a partition wall with a roof overhang is very useful.

@Bertram100 Thanks! What would be a “good” spacing? I was thinking about 50-80 cm (20-31 inches), anything more seems too much to me.

Then probably closer to 80 cm (31.5 inches). 50 cm (20 inches) would also work but it’s more like a “crawling space” with hardly any room to move. In my case, kitchen worktops are 100 cm (39 inches) apart, the shower entrance is 60 cm (24 inches) wide, and a standard door has an 80 cm (31.5 inches) clear opening. Maybe you can try to test what feels comfortable at around that distance. I wouldn’t go below 80 cm (31.5 inches) if the garden allows it. That’s enough space so you can pass each other even if you move a bit too far (without considering social distancing 😀 ) and enough room to operate a tool there or place a bucket without immediately tripping over it. And if you want to use that side as a covered storage area, you’ll still have some space to move around.

Oh, I’m also in favor of setbacks. Actually, the bigger the garden, the greater the distance should be. Especially if you plant two small trees on the left and right sides... Otherwise: better to have 80cm (32 inches) rather than 50cm (20 inches), better 100cm (40 inches) instead of 80cm (32 inches). Your wheelbarrow will thank you.

I would base it on what kind of person you are. First of all, I am against having the possibility to walk around it, because for many (though not all) garden owners, this leads to storing "odd stuff" behind the garden shed where it supposedly can’t be seen. If the garden shed looks nice, I would build it a little away from the boundary and landscape the surrounding area normally, just like the rest of the garden.
