ᐅ Photovoltaics on a hip roof or pyramid roof

Hello everyone,

We would like to install photovoltaic panels on the roof of our new build.
Now we are trying to decide which roof shape to choose. Visually, we slightly prefer a pyramid roof.
I also think that compared to a hip roof, it could be somewhat cheaper since there is less roof surface area, although I have read conflicting opinions on this -> pyramid roof = more expensive.
I can also imagine that with a three-sided installation, a more even energy yield could be achieved.
The clear advantage of a hip roof is obviously the large south-facing side.
However, in summer, the system might overheat and shut down.
Could it therefore be better to have a less optimal orientation but a broader and more even yield?
We are building in the north, near Braunschweig, in case that is relevant.

I would be very grateful for your help and experiences.

Best regards

In this case, I’m only concerned about the losses (disadvantages) between a hip roof and a pyramidal roof.

What others think doesn’t matter much to me, as long as I don’t have to clean up the vomit every day. This will be the second house we’re building. The first was a one-and-a-half story with a gable roof, featuring a turret at the front and a bay window at the back. I would never build like that again.
This time, hopefully, it will be our last house, and I’m planning more carefully.

Of course, I would appreciate it if one roof style clearly stood out due to its positive features and made this tough decision easier for me.

I have two more questions...

1. Photovoltaic modules experience performance losses over time (20-25 years). Is this related to aging and material fatigue, or do modules that are less frequently stressed (due to a less optimal position) last longer?

2. Is it possible to install the modules horizontally without issues? I have seen several pictures of this online, or are those modules specially designed for horizontal installation?

Thank you very much in advance.
