We will soon have our pellet heating system installed. There is a two-flue chimney present. The stove fitter says there is no need to renovate the chimney because pellets, as fuel, are very dry and produce little condensate.

The chimney sweep, on the other hand, says that a renovation is "almost always" necessary for pellets, and that the stainless steel liner to be installed must have a minimum length of 4 meters (13 feet) starting from the connection point of the flue pipe. Since there are only 2.70 meters (9 feet) up to the end of the existing chimney, the liner would then protrude about 1.30 meters (4 feet) above it, which I honestly find unattractive. I would rather install a new chimney on the outside wall of the house.

Does this new chimney also have to be 4 meters (13 feet) long? The distance up to the roof is only 2.5 meters (8 feet).

But who is actually right? I definitely don’t want to start any demolition work later on, especially since the building site is still open and everything is accessible. If any work has to be done, it should be done now.

Is it possible to calculate this somehow, or do you just have to take the risk whether the chimney will corrode or not? The flue gas temperature is at least 100°C (212°F), 1.60 meters (5.25 feet) of the chimney runs through an uninsulated attic, and then there is another meter (3 feet) of chimney protruding at the top.

I find it odd that the person selling me the system advises against renovation ("wait and see"), while the one who would not profit from it recommends doing it.

I just checked. For gaseous fuels, the effective chimney height (measured from the center of the flue gas inlet) must be at least 4 meters (13 feet), and for liquid or solid fuels, such as wood pellets, at least 5 meters (16 feet). If these heights are not met, the chimney may not draft properly.

We have a pellet boiler ourselves, the chimney is new, and the effective chimney height is about 9 meters (30 feet).

The chimney sweep is correct because they carry out the final inspection. The stove installer cannot approve the stove or chimney.

The chimney expert said that chimney renovation is not mandatory; he will accept it without it as well. We just need to decide if we want to take the risk or have to break everything up again later. However, I think we will build an additional lightweight chimney, which looks better and will keep the two flue passages of the current chimney for the stoves.
