ᐅ Paving Walkways – Permeable Joints / Weed-Free Solutions

Hello, we really like paved paths and surfaces. We already have them. However, what really bothers us is how quickly the joints fill with persistent weeds, and after 16 years, the algae growth (circular patches) has become unattractive. This algae is very firmly attached and can hardly be completely removed anymore.

My question is: Are there any recent developments to control both issues? Otherwise, what would be an alternative to paving? It should definitely be durable and low-maintenance, as the areas are large. Best regards, Steffi33.

Yesterday, our newspaper suggested letting the terrace grow a bit of weed as a mini cooling system, which would also reduce the heat radiated from the terrace.
So, I accidentally did everything right. 😀

Does a little weed really make that much difference? The bigger savings are probably to be expected if you shorten the terrace by about one meter (3 feet). 😉

By the way, your terrace got me thinking whether that might be an option for us too. New bricks are quite expensive and hard to find here in the south, but sometimes you can get some from demolition sites at reasonable prices. Does anyone know if there are any rules or considerations for using old bricks for paths and terraces, or can you simply use any old bricks for paving? I would probably exclude driveways because of vehicle traffic. But can these old bricks withstand compaction with a vibrating plate?

If you don’t report according to government regulations, you won’t get contracts and therefore no money.

Is that what you think when you read that adding greenery isn’t a bad idea? Holy moly. 😉

Regarding greenery growing in joints, I’m just concerned that it could become slippery quickly. Or is that less of an issue with the surface texture? Otherwise, you just have to be careful it doesn’t get too large and vigorous. At my parents’ place, a bush planted itself on a terrace that was unused for some time and within a year it started shifting the slabs 😉 (but with a regularly used terrace, you would probably notice that). Nature sometimes takes hold faster than you think. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo at hand right now (I could ask if they still have one).

Hello Bertram,

Nowadays, writers are strictly guided by certain views and tend to be unskilled supporters of green politics.
Those who don’t report in line with the government’s stance don’t get assignments and therefore no payment.
At the moment, the narrative is that the governing politicians are not to blame for the energy crisis, but rather (this might be the new term this winter) the energy wasters.
Read the newspaper like you would in the former GDR: between the lines.

Steven

Are you otherwise doing well? 🙄

Great! For various reasons, we haven’t managed to clear the weeds from the curb joints for six weeks now. I’ll just tell the complaining neighbor that I’m contributing to a better microclimate, and that his joint mortar is actually disrupting my plan. 🙂

Heard live in a conversation just yesterday: if everything between the lines is white, there’s nothing there!
Why do people always want to interpret things into something else?
If someone has something to say, they should say it clearly and directly, not “between the lines.”
At least my brain has no fortune-telling or clairvoyant function built in 🙁. Maybe that will come with Burkhard 2.0? 😀

P.S. I do agree with you to some extent that we unfortunately already have somewhat biased media. And there is room for improvement in the democracy index as well.
