We want to pave our driveway. It’s easily over 100m² (1,076 sq ft). We have quotes around 6,500€. Now I'm really feeling a bit stingy and wondering if it’s something we can do ourselves? It’s not exactly rocket science, right? Has anyone here done their own paving? Is it possible for a layperson to handle 100m² (1,076 sq ft) on their own?

Remove the gravel, excavate, add sand, compact, lay the parts, cover with filling sand, sweep into the joints. Theoretically simple, practically tedious, and it also needs to be level. Maybe together with someone who has done this many times before? For a small donation to support their needy children? Please avoid incorrect instructions!
If the gravel is laid and compacted, there is no need for excavation.
And sand is also incorrect; if anything, use 0-8mm (0-0.3 inches) crushed stone. Sand can be used for the joints.

HilfeHilfe8 Feb 2017 11:08I have paved an area of 15 square meters (161 square feet).
I wouldn’t underestimate 100m² (1,076 sq ft). That’s quite a lot and can’t just be done over a weekend.
Curbstones also need to be installed.
We also considered doing it ourselves but ended up having it done professionally, especially since there’s plenty of other tasks to handle when building. You just have to accept that the quality then depends on the tradesperson.

Once the gravel is laid and compacted, there is no need for further excavation.
And sand is also wrong; if anything, use crushed stone 0-8mm (0-0.3 inches). Sand can be used for the joints. This statement confused me a bit as well! Our civil engineer recommended that when replacing the soil from the foundation pit, we also have the future parking areas (about 65m² (700 ft²)) and the terrace excavated and filled with recycled material, which is then compacted. This way, you avoid having to replace and compact the subsoil afterward and only need to top it off with crushed stone.
Whether we will do the paving ourselves will depend on whether a friend (who has paving experience) can help us.

We paved 116 square meters (1,250 square feet) ourselves. It was really no problem at all. This kind of work can easily be done by two or three people... especially laying the stones goes quite quickly.
The hardest part (excavating + gravel base + compacting) is already done!!!!Respect. The question remains how well and evenly has the surface been stabilized so far. For us, the top layer of the construction road was freshly covered again with gravel and compacted.
About how long did it take you? With concrete edging stones? Driveway or patio?
