Hello everyone,

Are there any members here with experience having a passageway under a staircase? We are currently working on the floor plans with our construction company, and the attached suggestion came up. What do you think about it?

Alex

Yes... although "experience" might not be the right word. You don’t gain any special benefit from this arrangement. As long as the dimensions are correct and it is designed by a professional, the location of such a door or passageway is basically nothing noteworthy.

It could have been the case that there are disadvantages which are not immediately obvious and that would rule out this solution from the start. But if that is not the case, then I am glad.

We have that too – however, the door under the stairs only leads to the utility room, so our guests don’t have to constantly duck under the stairs.

Would it be possible to switch the utility room and office/restroom in your layout? I think that would be nicer…

If the sketch should already match the staircase length and other dimensions, you should take a look at a staircase with a rise of 19.8 cm (8 inches) and a tread depth of only 25 cm (10 inches) beforehand. This corresponds to a so-called step length of 64.8 cm (25.5 inches), while 63 cm (24.8 inches) is considered ideal.

Step length formula = 2 x rise + 1 x tread depth … IDEAL: 63 cm (24.8 inches) … in your case: 64.8 cm (25.5 inches)
Comfort formula = tread depth - rise … IDEAL: 12 cm (4.7 inches) … in your case: 6.2 cm (2.4 inches)
Safety formula = tread depth + rise … IDEAL: 46 cm (18.1 inches) … in your case: 44.8 cm (17.6 inches)

I have already considered that, but we want a secondary entrance from the garden/carport, and all of that is located where the utility room is now. So swapping them is rather not feasible.

That’s a good tip, thanks. I’ll do some research.
