Hello everyone,

we are currently building a house and now have to decide whether to choose oiled/waxed or lacquered hardwood flooring. Does anyone have experience with hardwood flooring and can help us?

Best regards

Hello,

this really comes down to personal preference, so no one can make the decision for you.

Oiled or waxed finishes usually look more natural but tend to be more sensitive. On the other hand, minor damage is easier to repair. This type of parquet also often requires more frequent maintenance, with manufacturers generally recommending annual care.

Lacquered parquet can sometimes appear a bit less natural but, in my opinion, it is very durable. Although it can be more slippery, especially with pets, it is less sensitive to damage. Maintenance is simple—just wipe with a damp cloth—and annual care is usually not necessary under normal use. However, if there is damage, the only solution is usually sanding the entire surface and reapplying the lacquer.

Hello Gundel,
we have oiled parquet flooring, while our neighbors have sealed parquet.
We’ve both had it for 10 years.
Definitely, the sealed/varnished parquet is more durable and shows far fewer scratches than our oiled flooring.
If you have children, I would definitely recommend sealed flooring today.
Oiled parquet looks great, more natural (it’s a matter of personal taste, as Andreas Euler also mentioned). However, it requires more maintenance. We borrow a machine from the hardware store once or twice a year to polish the parquet.
Enjoy building your new home!
