Hello everyone,

We have chosen engineered hardwood flooring for our house (pure oak, 3-layer, wear layer 2.7mm (0.1 inch), glued down). We are planning a concrete staircase with wood coverings (treads and risers). The suppliers of the wood coverings only offer standard colors (oak, beech, etc.), but we want the staircase to match the flooring uniformly. The parquet color is lighter than standard (special treatment). The company supplying the parquet can also install it as stair coverings (support layer plus a wear layer supposedly thicker than 2.7mm (0.1 inch) on top), and the tread and riser panels will be joined at the corners. Does anyone have experience with parquet stair treads instead of solid wood treads? Do they wear out quickly, etc.?

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Best regards,
NilsHolgersson

Wood flooring—including multilayer parquet, of course—can be installed on stair treads.
It is important to note that for both the tread and riser, the flooring must be fully glued to the substrate, and edge protection is necessary. With solid wood parquet, the thickness of the material often allows you to omit edge protection by having a carpenter round off the edges.
Parquet owners usually have a special "relationship" with their floors, so it is safe to assume the surface will be treated with care during use.
In conclusion: YES, wood flooring is suitable for the installation location you want!

You can do that, but I would be concerned about the miter joint on the edge being prone to splintering, especially with the rather coarse-grained oak. It would be more suitable for a household without children or pets, where people only walk around in socks.

We installed this in the basement using strip parquet flooring. In my experience, the biggest issue is that older people, pets, and children have difficulty properly "recognizing" the steps. Our parents and dogs have stumbled a few times because the floor transitions directly into the staircase. Somehow, it seems more challenging for depth perception or something like that.

We haven’t experienced any splintering, but I believe that is less of a concern with strip parquet flooring.

Special relationship with the hardwood floor... well.
There will be dents, there will be stains, there will be scratches; that's part of living in a home. You need to be aware of that.

If a company does the work, I would have few concerns.

Yes, we have that; we had the steps made by a carpenter and have been living with them for half a year. We think it looks great because of the seamless transition from the stairs to the hardwood floor, and so far (touch wood) there are no dents on the edges.
The carpenter made the steps from our hardwood flooring (white oiled oak), miter-cut and glued the edges, which is barely noticeable and shows no exposed joints.
I believe it depends on who does the work. Our carpenter had experience with this, so we had no concerns.
However, it was not inexpensive, quite the opposite...
