Annettsche8 Apr 2021 21:08We are planning a long fixed window element above the kitchen countertop. The architect has designed a sill height of 1.35 m (4 ft 5 in). I am only 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in) tall. Somehow, I can’t really picture it well. I do like that the window doesn’t start directly at the countertop, but is this height common or practical?
It’s rather too high. On top of the sill height, you also have the frame, which is not quite as thick with fixed glazing but still about 8cm (3 inches). We have 123cm (48 inches) – for me (187cm / 6'2") it’s fine, but for my wife (163cm / 5'4") it’s too high. 120cm (47 inches) would be better. You could also run the windowsill in front of the frame to save frame height.
Tip: at home, try sticking masking tape on the wall or window to "test" it.

That would be too high for me as well.
We have 112cm (44 inches). The window is a fixed pane measuring 1.4 × 2.5m (4 ft 7 in × 8 ft 2 in). Additionally, there is an 8cm (3 inches) frame. I wouldn’t go any smaller; otherwise, it will be tight with the electrical outlets.
From the top edge of the countertop (92cm / 36 inches) to the bottom edge of the window sill, it’s 19cm (7.5 inches).

A fixed window AND such a high sill doesn’t make sense—or a sill rail might be more appropriate. Above the countertop, you normally only need enough height under the window sash for the kitchen faucet or, if the window is above the stove, for the pots. What else should stand there: kitchen herbs, deep fryer, espresso machine? There may be specific individual reasons for this sill height, but usually only if part of the “sill” itself is already window (just fixed). If the entire window is fixed, such a high sill seems pointless to me, hence my suspicion of a misunderstanding.

The architect has now planned a parapet height of 1.35 m (4 ft 5 in)Is that the rough construction measurement? We also have about 10 cm (4 inches) above the countertop... even a fairly narrow window above, because there are two wall cabinets above that I can comfortably open at my height of 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in).
