Hello everyone,

we are currently renovating a house, and now it’s time to paint. Unfortunately, no one in my circle of acquaintances can help me with this.

It’s about the staircase. It’s still the original construction staircase, and now it needs to be painted. What type of paint is best to use? Should it be cleaned of dirt first and roughly sanded? Is a primer necessary?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

No rust.
What you see is just the rust protection. The staircase was installed 2 months ago.

Then it is primed. The rust protection acts as a primer. A glossy or matte alkyd resin paint, your choice, and it’s finished.

Are you renovating a new build???

We also have a steel stringer staircase. The primer serves as the rust protection.
Just buy a nice metal paint and you’re good to go.

I think this question fits better in the Painting/Stairs subforum.

Why would we renovate a new build?
The house is from 1965 and the staircase has just been replaced.

That’s actually perfect. Then you don’t have to prime again.
Fine sanding will still be best, though, right?

I don’t really see a reason to sand a primer.
In the end, it’s an unnecessary step. Anyway, we skipped it, and the paint is still holding up.
Even after 5 years.
