Hello,

We recently had our steel stringer staircase (raw condition) installed in a rust-brown color. We plan to do the painting ourselves.

Should I sand the surface beforehand? If yes, is it better to use a sanding machine or would hand sanding be sufficient?

Or should we apply the primer directly and then paint?

I would appreciate your help!

Best regards, andi

No sanding, just dust off. Then step a] apply Owatrol CIP. Let it dry thoroughly. b] apply a solvent-based alkyd resin paint in the color of your choice. Rust will never break through.
Waage Farben Hamburg has a website where you can find what you need. Karsten

As a final coat, I recommend the cip Hempel brilliant gloss. Waage currently has the can for just 27,-. You’ll be surprised, especially if you’re used to obihormbachbauhaus products, at how well this paint covers, spreads, and applies. It’s really on another level. Karsten

More than three decades ago, this was how we did it.

Everything was washed thoroughly to remove grease and other dirt.
Then it was painted with the chosen color, and that was it.

The paint is still intact.

This can be done indoors. Using the CIP ensures significantly better adhesion. Since it is as thin as primer, it dries very quickly. Karsten

The brown layer is actually the primer. So, just remove any drips if necessary and then apply the paint on top.
