Hello, I have a question about doing the painting myself. I’m considering painting my new build on my own. So far, it has been included in the overall price.

I have years of experience from a holiday job with a painting company, where I painted apartments and smaller spaces like cafés, so I’m not afraid of the work and I have some experience. However, that was always repainting existing coatings.

Painting a new build for the first time is new territory for me. So my question is: is it doable with two people? How many days should we roughly plan for? The area is about 200 m2 (2,150 sq ft) of living space. The builder will naturally handle plastering and filling.

Also, do you need to prime the surfaces first, or do you apply the paint directly (probably 2–3 coats)?

Thanks in advance!

That way you can gain some practical experience,
and you might get professional materials/tools at a reasonable price.
I'm relieved that you only mean interior work.
Two people with 1–3 weeks off, depending on the quality level desired.

With two people and taking vacation, it would take 1–3 weeks, depending on the quality you want.

That company no longer exists. I was 16 when I started there... That was two decades ago.

Hello,

We also considered doing that briefly but decided against it based on the experiences of friends. They worked on a 160 sqm (1,722 sq ft) house without a basement and ended up spending over 30 man-days (16 or 18 days working as a pair) and, after deducting material costs, saved less than €2,000. I think it was even just €1,500. So, that’s roughly €5 per hour... It’s not worth it. The professionals are simply much faster and get the materials significantly cheaper.

For other tasks like laying laminate flooring or installing a ventilation system, you might be able to do some work yourself.

Best regards,

Andreas

I have a silly question, but the construction description (see above, where I posted it) doesn’t mention anything about painter’s fleece. It’s not mandatory either. So, for us, the steps are: filling, sanding, priming, and two coats of paint – right?

From my experience with three building projects so far, the biggest savings through self-work have always been the insulation between the rafters in the attic. This has saved up to nearly 10,000 (currency) on occasion for a very unpleasant, tedious task that nobody enjoys (apparently not the general contractors/builders either), but it could be completed over a long weekend with a small team of 4-5 people. Of course, there are also people who describe painting and wallpapering as meditative work—I don’t count myself among them ;-)

The advantage is that you don't have to cover any furniture, etc. However, I would also let the professionals handle it. Every stroke is visible.
