Hello everyone, I am planning to repaint some of my Ikea Malm furniture and want to approach the job as professionally as possible to ensure a durable and high-quality finish. My specific question is: What is the best method for painting Malm furniture, what preparation is necessary, which materials do you recommend, and are there any special tips for the surface (which is melamine-coated) to ensure the paint adheres properly without unsightly bubbles or peeling? I would appreciate any detailed advice, as I have done some research already but am still missing some important information. Thank you!

Hello Dupafe,

Your plan to paint Malm furniture is a great idea, but it can come with some challenges, especially because of the melamine-coated surface.

First, the preparation:

1. Cleaning: Thoroughly degrease the surface with a mild cleaner to ensure no residues interfere with the paint.

2. Sanding: Lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (around 220 grit) to roughen the smooth surface, helping the paint adhere better. Avoid removing too much material—just dull the finish.

3. Priming: Use a high-quality adhesion primer suitable for plastics or melamine—this ensures optimal bonding between the substrate and the paint.

4. Painting: Apply several thin coats, sanding lightly between coats with very fine sandpaper (e.g., 320 grit). Acrylic water-based paints work well for furniture because they have low odor and dry quickly.

5. Finish: Depending on your preference, you can apply a clear coat. Water-based clear coats are recommended here.

Common mistakes include skipping the primer or applying paint too thickly, which can cause peeling.

Summary: Clean, lightly sand, prime, paint thinly with sanding between coats—for a durable and attractive result.

I hope this helps you! 🙂

Exactly. The primer for the melamine surface is really important; otherwise, the paint won’t adhere. Also, apply the paint very thinly and let it dry thoroughly.

Hello Dupafe,

I would like to add that you should pay attention to choosing the right product. Special primers designed for melamine or kitchen cabinet fronts are ideal. When cleaning, avoid using greasy or oil-based cleaners, as they can later cause the paint to come off.

Room temperature and humidity during painting also matter: ideally around 20 °C (68 °F) and low humidity, so the paint dries properly and no bubbles form.

For painting, you can use a brush, foam roller, or spray can. I recommend a spray can or a small spray system if possible, for a more even finish. Brush marks can remain visible otherwise.

One more tip: use very fine sandpaper (grit 320 or higher) for sanding between coats and always sand very carefully to avoid sanding through the paint.

I wish you much success and patience—it’s worth it!

Wow, it’s great that you want to paint your Malm furniture! It really makes a difference and gives the pieces a fresh new look. 🙂

My advice: Make sure to take your time and complete each step carefully – don’t rush the drying or sanding, otherwise the result won’t turn out as nicely. And if you’re using spray paint, it’s better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick one.

I think the wow factor is definitely worth it when everything goes smoothly! Have fun with it, and please keep us updated on how it’s going!
