Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to apply paint to an IKEA KALLAX insert and wonder how well paint generally adheres to melamine-coated surfaces. Does anyone have experience with this or can advise if there are specific pretreatments or types of paint that are particularly suitable?
I understand that melamine has a very smooth, hard surface that might affect adhesion. How do you handle issues like adhesion, drying time, and potential chipping with such coatings?
I would appreciate any tips, especially if someone has previously painted a KALLAX insert themselves and can share which methods work well long-term!

The question "Does paint really stick to melamine?" always makes me smile. Melamine is essentially a surface that thinks it’s untouchable – why? Because it is highly resistant and very smooth. The common belief that any paint will adhere to melamine is, in my opinion, a misconception.
Regarding the adhesion issue: Without thorough surface preparation, your chances are slim. Just painting over it? Forget it! The surface must either be sanded or treated with a primer/adhesion promoter.
From my experience, 2K polyurethane paint works better than acrylic. But even then, you need a rougher surface and the right primer. A quick spray-over will soon lead to the paint flaking off. So, if you want a durable, nice finish, you have to invest time—or just skip it altogether.

I’ll add this: It is really important to thoroughly clean the surface before sanding, for example with isopropanol, to remove all grease or silicone residues.
Without a clean and properly roughened surface, no paint will adhere permanently to melamine. Also, pay close attention to drying times to avoid stress or tension.
Special primers designed specifically for plastics and melamine-coated surfaces are recommended. These increase the bonding surface area and significantly improve long-term adhesion.

Thanks in advance for the tips!
One more question: Is it better to paint the entire KALLAX insert, or is it enough to just treat the visible surfaces? I’m concerned that if I paint the whole thing, the edges and joints might cause problems, since the melamine is often “open” there or other materials are visible.
And if you have any recommendations for specific brands or types of paint, feel free to share. The project should stay nice and durable for a long time.

Regarding the question:
A complete painting is possible, but you need to make sure that the edges are actually made of melamine-coated material. Often, they consist of laminated chipboard with plastic edge banding, which can make adhesion more difficult.
In any case, sanding and the use of a primer are recommended – especially single-component synthetic resin primers have proven effective.
Regarding the paint, I recommend 2K PU paints, as they are harder and more durable than acrylic paints. This also results in a uniform surface that is mechanically resistant.
One more tip: remove the insert before painting and ensure good ventilation. Allow at least 24 hours for drying time, preferably longer for full curing. This helps prevent stress cracks or chipping.
