Hello everyone,
I am planning to paint my IKEA Malm dresser myself, but I want to avoid as many mistakes as possible. My specific question is: What should I pay special attention to during the preparation and painting of Malm furniture, especially regarding surface treatment? Which materials provide a durable and even finish? Are there recommended methods for sanding, suitable primers, and types of paint that work well on the coated particleboard used in the Malm series? I would also appreciate any tips on tools and techniques.
Thank you for your support!

"Thin coats" are really essential. Better to apply several light layers than one thick coat. That makes sense to me! Thanks for that. I’m also curious if there’s a noticeable difference between painting the dresser lying down or standing up? Lying down seems practical for easier work, but does it definitely affect the finish quality at the edges?
Also: I’ve read that spray guns are recommended, but I can’t borrow one. Are a roller and brush sufficient for a good result? If not, are airless sprayers really much better for this kind of furniture?
