Hello everyone,

we are currently building a prefabricated house. In the bathroom, we will only tile part of the walls. We want to paint the remaining wall surfaces. Our prefab company says that a simple paint with abrasion resistance class 3 would be sufficient. However, we have heard from friends that this is definitely not enough.

Can anyone help us here? Which type of paint or material is best suited for bathroom walls? We have standard drywall (not moisture-resistant drywall) in the bathroom. Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards
Stefanie

It is best to have the walls plastered. This allows moisture to be absorbed and released again, making it more difficult for mold to develop accordingly.

We simply painted in a standard way. Our painter also said that this is sufficient.

Our mechanical ventilation system quickly removes moisture from the bathroom.

I would not agree to using standard drywall that is not moisture-resistant. Although a bathroom is not classified as a wet room and therefore the regulations according to DIN do not apply, there is still a safety aspect to consider.

The splash zones around the shower and washbasin will likely be tiled in your case, so ordinary emulsion paint will be sufficient for the remaining areas.

It's about the color, not the drywall.

I would use regular interior paint. There shouldn’t be any issues in the short to medium term. And after 3 years, if you’re tired of the "old" color, you can simply paint over it again :-).
