ᐅ Should you paint or wallpaper lime-cement plaster?

Hello,

I have lime-cement plaster throughout the entire house and want to start by painting everything white, possibly adding some accents after moving in.

The idea is simply to paint everything white first or maybe use wallpaper.

What have you done with your lime-cement plaster? Is it worth using silicate paint, or is the difference in indoor climate compared to an emulsion paint rather small? What should I pay attention to?

Does anyone perhaps have experience with wallpapers?

Many thanks to you all

We painted the lime-cement plaster with interior silicate paint (vapor-permeable). Two coats were necessary without a primer.

Is Go On Tiefgrund an acrylic primer?

@ truce: And what do you do years later when additional coats are needed and eventually the paint starts to peel? We originally just wanted to paint without wallpaper, but we’re starting to have doubts...

We are very satisfied with our fiberglass fleece; we would do it the same way again.
If you want to paint only, you need an extremely smooth surface, meaning sanding to level 2 (Q2), applying a full-surface filler (e.g., roller-applied filler), then sanding again before painting. I tried that on one wall, it looked great, but it was too expensive for me (roller filler!) and time-consuming.

We would not do additional sanding and filling. In the show home, they painted directly, and we think the result is good. Our main concern is what happens in 30 years when there are at least three layers of paint and it starts peeling. What do you do then? Scrape everything off? Put wallpaper over it?

With Q2, you should at least do some sanding; otherwise, it will still be quite uneven.

We painted directly on Q2 in the utility room, and you can see the difference compared to other rooms.
