Hello,
we want to paint the entire interior of the house white. The paint will be applied directly onto the fine, smooth plaster. Since it’s quite a large amount, does anyone have a recommendation for a manufacturer or supplier with a good price-performance ratio?

After using 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of paint for our house and paying 30€ for every 10 liters (2.6 gallons), I will never do that again. Next time, it will be Sto, and nothing else. The paint was a nightmare... I had to apply two coats everywhere.

Could you explain in more detail what happened? According to Stiftung Warentest, most paints should be fine starting at about 30 euros.

Hello Der Da,

Had to paint everything twice.
You haven't painted that often yet 😉 Take comfort, it will never happen to you again; next time you’ll spend a bit more money upfront, because painting once is already tiring enough 😎

Ok, Sto is definitely a good tip. Does anyone else have good or bad experience with a brand?

I have painted many times before, but usually only 2-3 rooms, not an entire house. The result was convincing, but the process was a nightmare. When you buy paint that isn’t cheap but doesn’t cover well, or is too thick, dries too quickly, etc., you end up regretting being stingy. Nowadays, I would gladly pay the extra 500 € in costs to use professional-quality paint. A bucket of STO paint usually costs around 65 € as far as I remember, but you also make faster progress and use slightly less paint. It does make a difference whether you have to paint 600 square meters (about 6,460 square feet) once or twice. Eventually, you just lose motivation 🙂

The paint I like to use is Max Bahr’s own brand with the green lid. However, I have only used it in rental apartments where 5 tenants had already painted before, and I mostly just had to do some touch-ups in a few rooms.

We used the white paint from Aldi and the colored paint from Tedox.
We only had to apply two coats where the wallpaper underneath was not white.
Usually, it's recommended to use more expensive paint, but we made sure it had the Blue Angel certification and asked around among acquaintances—everyone was satisfied with it, and so are we. 🙂

Hello kaho674,

I would definitely recommend using eco-friendly paint, at least for the main living areas and bedrooms. For hallways and secondary rooms, if budget allows, I would opt for low-emission paint (Blue Angel certified).

If the surface is plaster or gypsum, I would avoid using dispersion paint and wallpaper entirely, and instead use silicate paint or lime paint. This is because wallpapers and dispersion paints create a barrier on the wall, while silicate or lime paint allows moisture to pass through, which can be absorbed and released again by the plaster or gypsum. This measure improves the indoor climate.

Kind regards,
