We painted our carport. At first, I wanted to use a good wood stain to make sure the work wasn’t wasted. You can easily get caught out with paints and varnishes. So, I chose a well-known brand. Then I went to the hardware store. There, the same quantity was priced at less than half. Now you really wonder, am I crazy or what? What do you think?

So, how can a layperson recognize quality differences? It’s really difficult. When we were painting the interior walls, the painter told us he only uses paint XY because cheaper brands simply add fewer pigments to the "water," cutting costs. But then you have to apply three coats, which means more work, and the result looks uneven.

My dad bought paint for painting the fence at a hardware store. It wasn’t even cheap. Yet the entire paint peeled off after one year, even though it was clearly marketed as suitable for that purpose. Now he doesn’t just have no paint left on the fence; he also can’t simply paint over it. The so-called "junk" has to be completely removed before anything decent can be applied. Compared to that, paying 200 more seems like a bargain. But if you’re clever, you can probably save quite a bit.

We had the same problem. We bought 10 liters (2.6 gallons) of Consolan weather protection paint from a specialty paint store for €170. At home, we checked online and found that 10 liters (2.6 gallons) cost just under €100. I do accept a certain premium for buying from a specialty store because you also get expert advice. But a €70 price difference was clearly too much for me, so I returned the paint to the store and ordered it online.
