ᐅ Organizing Kallax shelves: use the original baskets or alternatives?

I
IsamulaI’m currently considering how to best organize my Kallax shelf. I’m unsure whether to use the original Kallax baskets from Ikea, which apparently fit perfectly and are sturdy, or to opt for alternative baskets and boxes that might better match the existing interior style or offer special features, such as lids, handles, or different materials.
It’s important to me that the overall look is tidy, the baskets are easy to handle, and they remain durable over time. Additionally, I’m interested in hearing how other users rate their experiences regarding size, flexibility, and value for money. Are there insights on whether the original baskets are truly the best choice, or if alternatives provide more room for individuality and functionality?
How do you manage this with your Kallax? What advantages and disadvantages do you see with original baskets compared to other storage options? I would really appreciate your assessments and tips.

Hello Isamula,
I have been using my Kallax shelf for years and can tell you from experience that the original Kallax baskets are a very reliable and practical solution. They fit perfectly and are well made, which is especially important if you use the shelf regularly and often pull out the baskets.
Of course, it always depends on the intended use. For items you access frequently, the original baskets are great because they are sturdy and easy to handle. However, if you place more emphasis on design or need different sizes, it might be worth considering alternatives. Just make sure the measurements are exact, otherwise the shelf’s stability could be compromised.
My advice: If you want to store very different items, feel free to mix original baskets with a few design boxes that better match your interior style. This way, you get both functionality and appearance.

Hi Isamula,
you’re addressing a topic I have also wondered about for a long time: original or alternative – what a choice ;-)
Yes, the baskets are really practical, I like their texture and ease of use. But honestly, sometimes they can feel a bit regional, especially if the apartment is already very Ikea-heavy in its design. I often find alternatives, such as wicker baskets or woven boxes, to feel much more homely.
Of course, they don’t always fit perfectly, and sometimes you need to come up with a plan to adjust the size exactly or repurpose the Kallax a bit. A small DIY project with the baskets or a bit of paint, and the whole thing looks almost new! 🙂
My experience: original baskets are great for organizing and quick access – but if you want to add more personality, feel free to try the alternatives – the handling might be a bit different, but it’s fun! 😉

I would like to add some technical points, as the question of original baskets versus alternatives involves multiple aspects:
First, the fit: The original Kallax baskets are precisely designed to match the shelf dimensions, allowing them to slide in and out without any play. This prevents rattling and minimizes material wear. Other baskets need to be carefully chosen to meet the same dimensions. It’s better if they are slightly tight rather than too loose, as stability suffers otherwise.
Second, the material: Ikea uses a durable plastic weave for the baskets, which is easy to clean and resistant to moisture damage. Wicker baskets or similar natural materials may look nice but require more maintenance and age faster. Depending on use, this can be a crucial factor.
Third, the functionality: The original baskets have built-in handles and are stackable; they are also relatively lightweight, which makes pulling them out easier. Alternative options sometimes offer additional features like fabric liners, lids, or different designs, which can create great accents in a creative workspace or living room.
Regarding price: Original baskets cost a bit more per piece than simple plastic baskets but are more durable. Cheaper alternatives may wear out quickly or be impractical.
I agree, even though the aesthetic aspect shouldn’t be overlooked.
My recommendation: Think carefully about what you want to store and how often you will pull out the boxes. For heavy use, the originals are better suited; for more decorative purposes, alternatives can be considered. If you choose alternatives, be sure to measure twice and consider the material and maintenance.
Do you already have a specific type of items you plan to store in the Kallax? That could also make the decision easier.
