Hello,

we are about to purchase a plot of land on a hillside. It slopes down to the northwest and offers a wonderful view over vineyards to the north. This brings us to the main challenge: finding the optimal orientation for the house to maximize sunlight inside, while still enjoying the beautiful northern view. This view is what makes the property truly unique.

The road, as shown in the picture, runs above the property on the south side.

We would appreciate your insights and experiences with northwest-facing slopes and the best house orientation in such cases. What potential do you see in this plot?

Thank you in advance!

Best regards

Ridge direction SW to NE. Living room in the NW corner, corner glazed, so glass facing SW and NW receives sunlight from around 2 PM, and offers a good view to the north. Terrace also around the corner. There are also days when you look for a shady spot.

Thank you for your contribution!
So you also believe that there is enough sunlight available?

With a north-facing slope, most people tend to be immediately discouraged.

Well. It’s a compromise. But during the period between the equinoxes, from March 21 to September 21, it should be fine because the sun moves clearly towards the west and in summer, between May and the end of July, even towards the northwest. In the winter half-year, it does get shady behind the house. But so what, you won’t be able to change the landscape anyway. There’s always something.
